Historic 841 Clifton Road, Reimagined

Tucked into the lush, historic landscape of Historic Druid Hills, 841 Clifton Road is the kind of home that stops you in your tracks. Originally built in the 1920s, this stately three-bedroom needed to grow for a modern family, but it had to do so gracefully—honoring its past while stepping confidently into the present. Strict historical guidelines and a tricky site topography meant Harvin and team had to be strategic, ensuring that every square foot of the expansion felt intentional, seamless, and as if it had always been there. The result? A home that doubled in size yet never lost an ounce of its original charm—earning it GOLD at Atlanta Magazine’s HOME 2024 Georgia Design Awards.

This project was another dream collaboration with architect John Plaster, who brought his unmatched vision to the table. Together, the team created a home that doesn’t just look historic—it feels it, while offering the kind of thoughtful, modern design that makes life that much better. With distinct wings, a striking reflecting pool, and an effortless flow between old and new, 841 Clifton Road is proof that expanding a home doesn’t mean losing its soul.

A Home that Feels Meant to Be

Expanding a historic home in a neighborhood like Druid Hills means respecting the past while offering room for the future. We knew this build had to be as characteristic as the original structure while still feeling welcoming and livable. The design solution broke the expansion into three defined architectural wings: the original brick home, a striking new granite sunroom, and a brick garage that anchors the property. These elements work together like they’ve been there all along, effortlessly balancing old-world craftsmanship with modern functionality.

From the moment you step onto the property, the home commands attention in the best way. The granite sunroom, a powerful yet refined volume, overlooks the new reflecting pool and terrace, reinforcing the home’s strong architectural lines and making way for views of Fernbank Forest. The roofline tapers down as it moves toward the backyard, with each eave progressively lower, creating a sense of intimacy and cohesion. At the front, the new family room and bay window open up the space, offering the kind of easy, inviting atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

Made for Entertaining, Inside and Out

It’s rare to find a home that balances presence with warmth, but this one pulls it off beautifully. As one Georgia Design Awards judge put it, "This beautiful home is stately yet inviting and keeps with the integrity of its historical features." Another noted, "It's perfect for a party or gathering!" We took that as the ultimate compliment, because this home was designed to be lived in.

The reflecting pool and terrace act as an extension of the interiors, creating a natural flow between inside and out. Whether it’s an intimate family dinner or a full-scale celebration, the layout is made for effortless entertaining. Grand when it needs to be, cozy when it counts—this home knows how to set the scene.

Preserving Character, Elevating Design

Harvin and Tommy have a deep love for restoring and reimagining historic homes, and working with John Plaster—one of the best in the business—is always the cherry on top. Bringing new life to 841 Clifton Road was a labor of love, a balancing act of scale, detail, and storytelling. And when it all came together, the team knew it was something special.

One of the greatest joys of this project was making sure every new detail felt like it had always belonged. The tapered roofline, the scaled-down eaves, the way the home now sits so naturally within its surroundings—none of it happened by accident. Every inch of this transformation was carefully considered to ensure it honored the home’s past while making it better than ever.
